Daily Heart Meds May Kill Pancreatic Cancer

April 27, 2008

Am I the only one who hasn’t heard this?

Local doctors said some common drugs may kill pancreatic cancer.A few months ago, we told you about actor Patrick Swayze and his battle with pancreatic cancer.Doctors said people usually don’t know they have pancreatic cancer until it is advanced, which can be deadly for the patient.

Doctors already know that some heart medications seem to slow the spread of pancreatic cancer.Doctors at Jefferson Hospital released even better news about the drugs on Monday.”Cancer cells can die. Basically it affects the cancer cells to cause program cancer cell death. That’s when the cells die when you treat them with these medications and the data is very significant,” Dr. Hwyda Arafat said.Arafat said common heart medications called angiotensin receptor blockers or ARBs reduce a tumor’s blood supply, which is essential for tumor growth. Doctors have known for 10 years that people on these medications have less cancer.
Monday’s findings that ARBs may also stop the cancer in its tracks could lead to new treatment for the deadly disease.Arafat said ARBs are already available, inexpensive, safe and well tolerated.
