The gospel according to James…Dobson that is

June 25, 2008

Well, here we go again. The various e-mail scams aren’t working, McCain is continuing to lose ground to Obama in spite of the Newsweek fluff piece on his better half, so now we’re going to go at it the religion angle one more time.

Not Pat “snuggles up with dictators for diamond mining” Robertson. No. This time, let’s get the guy who agreed that “Happy Feet” had gay undertones. Dr. James Dobson.

For some reason, every utterance of a self-anointed person-of-God’s mouth seems to be accepted as the gospel truth. Why? If they (or anyone) is going to accuse someone of something, then at least get the facts straight.

Led by Pastor Kirbyjon Caldwell, jamesdobsondoesntspeakforme.com has pointed out the fallacies in Dobson’s accusations. For the record, Pastor Caldwell, a long time supporter of Bush, is endorsing Obama.

Dobson:

“I think [Obama is] deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own world view, his own confused theology” (Focus on the Family Broadcast).

What Obama actually said:

“But kneeling beneath that cross on the South Side, I felt I heard God’s spirit beckoning me. I submitted myself to His will, and dedicated myself to discovering His truth and carrying out His works” (A Politics of Conscience).

“And in time, I came to see faith as more than just a comfort to the weary or a hedge against death, but rather as an active, palpable agent in the world and in my own life” (A Politics of Conscience).

So who is it that’s “deliberately distorting”?

Uh huh. That’s what I thought.
